Michael Wheeler, CEO
Michael P. Wheeler leads ILM Capital and chairs the investment committee. He directs the operations, management, and strategy of ILM. He is a serial entrepreneur having founded and monetized three technology businesses over the last 20 years with combined equity values of greater than $400M. Integrex Systems, mindSHIFT Technologies, and Segovia Inc. were all successfully conceived, grown, operated, and sold to publicly traded businesses.
Mr. Wheeler began investing in multifamily and student focused real estate in 2012, and provides the in-house capital for all ILM acquisitions.
Mark Moore, Chief Financial Officer
Mark Moore has over 35 years of operational and financial experience, where he oversaw engineering, operations and finance. During his career he has helped to raise $2 billion in public and private capital. Prior to joining Segovia, he was a senior financial executive in the communications industry, including startups, mergers and acquisitions, capital markets formation and treasury operations. At MindShift Technologies, his tenure as Chief Financial Officer and founder helped formulate a managed services concept into a commercial service reality. He helped rise over $42 million in private equity and developed a business plan for the utility computing business.
Mr. Moore was the Chief Operating Officer, Executive Vice President and owner of Segovia Inc. Segovia provided global IP services to the Department of Defense.
At CONXUS Communications, his tenure as Chief Financial Officer resulted in a seamless transition from development stage to nationwide commercial service. He helped rise over $500 million in total capital, including $100 million in private equity and developed a financing model for the wireless business.
As Chief Financial Officer of USA Mobile Communications, Mr. Moore completed their IPO, raising $225 million in public equity and $1 billion in total capital. He also significantly improved cash flow margins to 45% through innovative enhancement, automation and systems productivity, while increasing their subscriber base from 50,000 to 1.2 million. Prior to these senior financial positions, Mr. Moore provided auditing and financial evaluation for Arthur Andersen and Company, as well as accounting and budgeting functions for Graphic Scanning Corporation.
He has a Bachelor of Science is in Accounting and an MBA in Finance. He held a top-secret security clearance.
A.J. Hawrylak, Chief Operating Officer
A.J. Hawrylak joins ILM Capital, with over 12 years of experience in management, operations and marketing. Within ILM Capital, A.J. is responsible for the supervision of the senior management team, portfolio operations, establishing performance goals, and fostering relationships with existing and prospective clients. In addition, he is responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of all external and internal facing marketing and leasing initiatives for the entire ILM Capital portfolio which is comprised of over 3,800+ beds across the United States. A.J. leads all operational, marketing, communications, sales efforts, and oversees and develops training efforts in customer service, leasing, and resident retention.
AJ holds a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from George Mason University.
Janelle Tiernan, General Counsel
Janelle Tiernan serves as General Counsel and is responsible for risk management of ILM. With nearly 20 years of legal experience, she has concentrated her practice on real estate transactions including acquisition, financing, and disposition of multifamily and student assets, condominium conversions, as well as commercial and residential development projects. Ms. Tiernan manages all legal matters for the Company, and oversees corporate governance and risk management. Ms. Tiernan is also highly involved in Company operations, including property, asset and construction management.
Ms. Tiernan received her Juris Doctor degree from Suffolk University Law School in Boston.
Brian Farr, Vice President - Acquisitions
Brian Farr is Vice President – Acquisitions for ILM. Brian leads the effort to identify, value and perform due diligence on prospective portfolio investments. He previously served ILM as Chief Financial Officer and in this role managed the accounting, financial reporting, tax and treasury functions. He also took a lead role in the sourcing and underwriting of investment opportunities as well as obtaining debt and equity needed to fund acquisitions.
Prior to joining ILM, Brian served as Controller and Chief Financial Officer for 17 years for both private equity and real estate private equity firms, most recently with Redwood Real Estate Partners (now Kairos Investment Management Company) where he worked for nine years. While at Redwood, Brian created the accounting, tax, treasury, insurance, and HR infrastructure and also underwrote and asset managed student housing and multifamily investments during Redwood’s earlier stages.
Brian began his career with Price Waterhouse, spending five years there as a Tax Associate and Senior Tax Consultant in the Dallas and Washington, DC offices. He also served in the United States Peace Corps as a Small Business Development volunteer in Romania, where he helped small businesses write business plans, procure loans and implement financial management techniques.
Brian is a Certified Public Accountant and a CFA charterholder. He holds a Bachelor’s in Business Administration in Accounting and a Master’s in Taxation from Baylor University.
